Cocora Valley: hiking among wax palms and Andean mountains

A nature and adventure experience in one of the most emblematic landscapes of the Coffee Region.

Discover the Cocora Valley, a natural wonder renowned for its verdant mountains, cloud forests, and extraordinary wax palms. This hiking experience begins in Salento, Quindío, and allows you to explore diverse natural environments while discovering the rich landscapes and ecology of this region of Colombia.

The route combines rural trails, mountain paths, bridges, wooded areas, and natural viewpoints. Along the way, you can admire the majestic wax palms, enjoy sweeping views of the valley, and discover the relationship between the landscape, local communities, and the conservation of the land.

The complete circular route is approximately 12 kilometers long, takes an estimated 5 to 6 hours to complete, and ranges in altitude from 2,400 to 2,940 meters above sea level. It is classified as moderately difficult; however, some sections can be challenging due to slopes, altitude, mud, and changing weather conditions.

A tour through four natural environments

1. Cloud forest

The hike passes through areas of lush vegetation, along damp trails, past rivers, and over mountain bridges. Mist is a common feature of the landscape and can appear at different times of day, creating an atmosphere characteristic of Andean ecosystems.

2. La Montaña Farm

One of the most challenging points of the route. The ascent leads to a high area offering exceptional views of the surrounding landscape. It's a recommended spot to rest, regain energy, and continue the hike at the group's pace.

3. Natural viewpoints

During the descent and at different points along the route, panoramic views of the Cocora Valley, the Quindío mountains, and wax palm formations appear. Visibility conditions will depend on the day's weather.

4 Palm forest

The most iconic part of the experience leads to areas where numerous wax palms stand. Their height and silhouette make this landscape one of Colombia's most recognizable natural symbols.

The wax palm: a natural symbol of Colombia

The wax palm is the national tree of Colombia and a representative species of the Andean forests. Some specimens can reach approximately 60 meters in height, which is why it is considered one of the tallest palms in the world.
